General Live Streaming and Video Tips and Troubleshooting (PCS Pro) Follow
Whenever possible, computers should be connected by ethernet cable to the network as opposed to WiFi.
This is especially important when using Remote Video which assumes a consistent connection with both computers on the same network.
Although PCS Pro will prompt to create the necessary Windows Firewall rules when enabling Remote Video, if other firewall software is installed this may also block communication. Remote Video connects to the Video Analyst’s PCS Pro over TCP using port 9200 by default. While PCS Pro tries to provide the appropriate connection details when Remote Video is enabled on the Video Analyst’s computer, some level of understanding of the network may be required to ensure the connection is possible. Try both the computer name and IP Address when connecting via Remote Video on the streaming computer.
If no connection is possible, please ensure standard networking is working which may require your existing IT Support to become involved. For example, can you ping the IP Address or Computer Name from the live stream computer?
Remote Video will have a slight delay from the live action to help with reliability but this should not cause any issues live streaming. The following delays would be considered typical for a well running setup:
- Video Analyst Video when directly connected to Blackmagic H.264 Pro Recorder - Less than one
second from live
- Streaming computer connected via Remote Video - between two and four seconds from live
- The live stream itself is typically between 10 and 20 seconds behind the live feed, but this depends on the Live Stream Provider
As alluded to above, it is best practice to close all unnecessary applications on the live streaming computer, especially on slower laptops. So, ensure all internet browsers, email programmes, and social media apps, etc, are closed before beginning the live stream. This will minimise the demands on the laptops processing power so that all of it can be allocated to the live streaming, which is an intensive process.
If the live stream needs to be monitored on the live streaming service platform or another website, it is best to do this on another device and not the live streaming laptop. This is a fairly normal pitfall but can cause additional load on the computer which may be required to keep the live stream smooth and stable.
If the live stream buffers on the service platform or on a website that it is embedded onto, check the CPU percentage in the Video Display window. If this is consistently close to 100%, or touches it, open the Windows Task Manager to check which application(s) are consuming the laptop’s processing capacity. The list of live applications may reveal some that have been accidentally left open but which can be closed without affecting the stream; highlight them and click End Task to do so.
PCS Pro’s live streaming service has been tested thoroughly with Windows’ built in Anti-Virus protection, namely Windows Defender. When enabling video, you will have been prompted to enable certain folders on the computer from real-time scanning in Windows Defender. If the live streaming computer is using another Anti-Virus or security product, it is highly likely this could interfere with the PCS Pro video features.
If is recommended that the following folders be excluded from any other Anti-Virus real-time protection features:
• C:\Program Files (x86)\NV Play\Media Components\x86\
• %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp\nvplay\
• < path to Documents folder >\Cricket Matches\
• %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp\nvplay\
If for some reason there is no video or audio coming from a Blackmagic device, check these are available in Blackmagic’s Media Express software.
If either the audio or video is breaking up or not available first try Restart Video Player, then unplug the capture device then finally restarting the Blackmagic device then PCS
Pro.
