How to Score on PCS Follow
There are Four Different Approaches to Scoring on the PCS App
- Both Innings Ball-by-Ball
- 1st Innings Manual Scoring – 2nd Innings Ball-by-Ball
- 1st Innings Ball-by-Ball – 2nd Innings Manual Scoring
- Both Innings Manual Scoring
Note: The instructions below assume that you have been signed up and registered on Play-Cricket; be a member of, and have been assigned a scoring role for your Play-Cricket site; and fixtures have already been set up in Play-Cricket and downloaded to the app.
Ball-by-Ball Scoring: This method follows every delivery in real time, just like traditional paper scoring. You input each ball's outcome (e.g. runs, wickets, extras) as they happen, ensuring a detailed and accurate record of the match. This method also automatically updates live scores after each delivery on Play-Cricket, PCS Live, and live scorecards if the match is being streamed.
Manual Scoring: Instead of logging every ball, you enter the score at your convenience—either periodically throughout the innings or just the final totals. This is useful when live tracking isn’t needed or if you’re catching up after scoring on paper. However, it won’t provide live updates or detailed ball-by-ball statistics.
This article focuses on Ball-by-Ball Scoring. For more information on Manual Scoring, please visit Entering a Manual Score (PCS) – Play-Cricket
Images below were captured on a mix of iPad and Android tablets. Wording and icon positioning may vary by device.
1. Both Innings Ball-by-Ball
1. Log in to PCS, select your site, then select the relevant competition.
2. Choose the relevant game from your Matches screen and select Start Match.
3. Confirm/select players for both teams. Where possible, enter teams in Play-Cricket.com prior to match day to save time.
4. Use the Filter button below Edit Team to filter the available players by squad (assuming squads have been set up correctly in Play-Cricket).
5. If a player is missing from the Team Selection list, you can use the New Custom Player button to create a single use player. Further information can be found here: Adding a Custom Player (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
6. Having selected players for both teams, click the Edit Team button.
7. You will now see your selected players. Select your wicket keepers and captains by pressing the three dot icon next to the relevant player’s name.
8. Assign the required role to the player. You can also use this feature to remove players if selected in error.
9. Once all players have been selected, and wicket keeping and captain roles assigned, press Next.
10. You may be prompted to confirm that one or both teams does not contain 15 players. If satisfied with your player count, select Yes.
11. Select Continue to Match Setup if ready to live score. Save and Exit if you wish to score later.
12. Under Match Setup you can adjust your App and Match Settings. Your Match Settings (e.g. wide values, max overs per bowler etc) should have been preconfigured by your league but can be edited here. Similarly, you may wish to adjust your app settings, for example whether to Show wagon wheels, or to Confirm balls (recommended for beginners or those who prefer the extra confirmatory step). Select Match Setup when done.
13. Choose who won the toss under Toss Won By, whether they Elected to Bat or Bowl. It's very important to get this right so ensure this is confirmed before pressing Done.
14. Select Score manually or Ball-by-Ball for the 1st innings. For the purpose of this article, we’ll be focusing on ball-by-ball scoring. For more information on scoring manually, please refer to the following article: Entering a Manual Score (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
15. You'll now be prompted to select the Strike Batter, Non-Strike Batter, and Bowler.
16. You’ll now be presented with your main scoresheet. Scoring buttons will appear towards the bottom of the screen.
NB. If you see the scoring buttons “bunched up” or otherwise distorted, you may need to select full screen mode in your device, or remove your task bar (consult your device manual if unsure how to do this).
17. Apply scores for each delivery by selecting the relevant number. If wagon wheels have been enabled, you’ll need to indicate where the ball ended up on the field after each scoring shot. For more information on wagon wheels, including how to disable or enable them, read the following article: Using A Wagon Wheel (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
18. Confirm the result of each delivery by pressing the tick button if you selected this option in Match Settings. Otherwise, selecting a scoring button will move instantly to the next delivery.
19. Should you need to amend settings, such as toggling on or off Show Wagon Wheels or Confirm Balls, this can be done at any stage by returning to your Match Settings by clicking the three dot icon at the top right of your screen. More information on Match Settings can be found here: Match Settings (PCS).
20. When the full complement of legitimate deliveries has been bowled, a summary pop up will prompt you to either End Over or Continue this over. For further information on short or long overs, please refer to the following article: Short and Long Overs (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
21. Extras can be selected in the row of buttons towards the bottom of the screen.
22. The first time you apply a wide or no ball, a prompt will ask if you wish to Continue scoring with the preset extras values, or whether you wish to amend them. This is your final opportunity to change these values.
23. In the event of a wicket falling, simply hit the red wicket button.
24. You can now confirm the Batter out, the Dismissal type and any fielders involved if required.
25. Confirm Dismissal Type and press Done.
26. Once satisfied with the wicket details, confirm with the Tick button.
27. The wicket will now appear in your scoresheet, and a new batter must be selected.
28. If you need to record a wicket off a wide, first select the Wide button, then the Wicket button. You’ll see the relevant dismissal types are filtered to reflect only those dismissal types possible off a wide. For further information on recording a stumping off a wide, please read How Do I Record A Stumping Off A Wide? (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
29. Correcting Errors. If you need to amend an entry, you have the ability to correct mistakes and use the autocorrect feature to adjust subsequent deliveries.
- To edit an individual ball, an over, or to insert a missing ball, please read Edit a Ball Or Over, Or Insert A Ball (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
- To change a batter or bowler who has been selected in error, please read Changing A Batter/Bowler (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
- For more information on how the Autocorrect, please refer to Using the Autocorrect (PCS) – Play-Cricket.
30. Once you’ve completed your allotted overs for the innings, or the batting team have run out of wickets, an End Innings - Compulsory Close prompt will ask you to confirm the innings closure.
31. To start the next innings, you will need to select the New Innings button.
32. A new scoresheet for the 2nd innings will appear. Continue to score as per the steps above, until the match is over. If the side chasing surpass the first innings total, or run out of wicket or overs, an information dialogue will prompt you to end the match. Press OK if satisfied with the scores.
33. You’ll be now taken to the scorecard for final review, editing and submission. Press OK to confirm.
34. When applying final editing to the scorecard, use the tabs at the top to switch between innings.
35. Once satisfied the scores are correct, select End Match.
36. An information dialogue will give you the option to either Cancel, to return to the previous screen; Save and Exit, if you wish to come back to this point later; or Finalise Result if ready to close and submit your scorecard.
37. Confirm the result and press Done.
38. A second confirmation dialogue to submit your match. Once finalised, team stats, player stats will be updated on Play-Cricket, and bonus and league points for league tables will be automatically calculated if applicable. NB. scorecards can still be edited via your admin side of your Play-Cricket site.
39. The match will now be moved to the Completed section under MATCHES in your PCS login screen. Clicking on the match will present three options:
-
- View / Share, which allows you to print the scorecard to a PDF, and is strongly recommended.
- Re-sync to Play-Cricket, which reuploads and is useful if you’re experiencing signal strength issues at your ground.
- Remove from Device, which will remove the match data from your scoring device.
